Government Information Awareness. A play on "Total/Terrorism Information Awareness", the citizen-surveillance tool proposed (and just killed) by the government, GIA is a system that automatically monitors the web and news media, collecting information about the government's activities. The results are available to us citizens. As the site says, it's an effort to restore the balance between the government's ability to monitor its citizens, and vice-versa.
